We chose our main character, the victim, to be a male. This challenged various stereotypes. Firstly: that the victim is a slightly more vulnerable young female character; and also, that the ruling audience for a psychological thriller is women.
The typical female victim for a thriller was established partly in 1960's with Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho". This became a common standard for many thriller films for years to come and still today. Although, a few do challenege the stereotype which is what we set out to do.
I was slightly inspired by the Eli Roth movie, 'Hostel' where the women are the ones that trick the men and the men become victims.
The trailer can be seen here.
Keeping in slightly stereotypical form, our villain was also a male.
depicted in a black jacket as many films do. I do think however this is an effect method.
The mis en scene of the facial expression, combined with the previously seen 'prison bars' behind adds the effect of danger and doom for our victim.
